About Us

Our Welcome Makes You Feel Local

The Dog (as it is known by the locals) is the only Pub on East Mersea - with a long history on the island - it used to be known as the Grey Goose - a 1769 document in Essex Record Office refers to it by that name, however, by 1855 it was known as the Dog and Pheasant and the name stuck.

In 1928 the building was much extended on the west side, and since then, the old part has been used as the pub restaurant, a holiday home, and now a private residence.  If you look closely at the photo of the original pub below, you will see the original pub sign - this sign now proudly hangs in our restaurant.

We have two bars, as you walk in the main entrance, on the left is the main bar where you can meet our lovely locals and enjoy a drink or two and enjoy our varying menu.  We welcome walk-ins for food in either the bar or our restaurant but do recommend that you book in advance as we get very busy especially during holidays and the summer. On the right is our smaller bar which is our dog friendly room for your four legged friends.

There is also ample space in the large garden to relax and enjoy the sunshine and a large car park to boot.

Children are of course most welcome with well behaved parents.  Please note that children under 12 are not permitted in the bar area after 9pm.

So next time you are on Mersea Island, head due East and join us and our friendly locals for great drinks, great food and great company.

As we say... 'Our Welcome makes you Feel Local'
